Informed consent the real issue

by Barbara Loe Fisher

What stands between us and the Brave New World envisioned by those conducting a war on microorganisms?

I believe it is a return to a search for truth that, as Hippocrates maintained, acknowledges the vital spirit and the innate healing power of nature and, as Aristotle and Kant suggested, is based on both empiricism and rationalism so that a balance between use of the intellect and acknowledgement of the vital spirit can free man from an obsession with science and technology and allow him to live in harmony with nature, humbling acknowledging the superior wisdom and power of our Creator.

I am impressed with the philosophy of chiropractic because it respects the beauty, logic, and power of the natural order and that of the Creator who made it and seeks to utilize that logic and power by working in harmony with the body's natural ability to resist disease and heal itself.

So where do we go from here? What to we do in the face of an increasingly powerful mass vaccination infrastructure that is fueled by the narrow minded ideology of public health officials and the money of industry and the complicity of many medical doctors and the apathy of most politicians and a misinformed public?

As managed health care is tightening the noose around the neck of the chiropractic profession, threatening to cut it out of the economic picture, should chiropractic agree to endorse vaccination as a tradeoff, hoping to gain admittance to the inner circle? Or does chiropractic, standing on principle, publicly oppose vaccination and risk further harrassment at the hands of organized medicine?

That is for the leaders of the chiropractic profession to decide, but I will give my opinion. I believe that to endorse vaccination as philosophically compatible with chiropractic is to fatally compromise the integrity of the philosophy of chiropractic as developed by D.D. and B.J. Palmer.

However, I also believe you do not have to publicly oppose vaccination at this time because you are in a philosophically strong position to unite your profession by adopting an uncompromising informed consent stance that is compatible with your history of supporting freedom of choice in healthcare.

For the already stated reasons, the informed consent standard is one that is ethically and legally defensible. Politically I do not believe it can be morally challenged with any success by anyone.

The ethic of informed consent carries with it two commodities valued highly by Americans: information and freedom. At this historic crossroads when Americans are beginning to embrace a more spiritual and enlightened concept of health, chiropractic and its life affirming philosophy is in a unique position to make the difference as to whether our children and grandchildren will have the human right to freely choose the kind of health care they want for themselves and their families or whether they will be forced to submit to government and industry-dictated medical care that includes forcing dozens of altered viruses and bacteria into their bodies.

If the chiropractic profession will unite around the high moral principle of informed consent and then join with families across America in defending that basic human right by translating it into state and federal law, I believe that both your profession and our nation's health and liberty will be secure.
