Guy F. Riekeman, D.C., president of the Palmer colleges and the Palmer
Center for Chiropractic Research, recently announced two major
appointments, filling the remaining positions on his President's Cabinet.
He also announced the creation of an administrative representative for
his office at Palmer College of Chiropractic West as well as two new
advisory groups, one at each college.
Brian J. McAulay, D.C., Ph.D., was appointed vice president for
academic affairs (VPAA) with responsibility for the instructional and
clinical programs at Palmer College of Chiropractic, Davenport, Palmer
College of Chiropractic West, San Jose, and the new Palmer College in Port
Orange, Florida. Dr. McAulay's appointment came after an international
search process that began last summer. Kevin McCarthy, D.C., M.S.Ed.,
served as temporary VPAA prior to McAulay's appointment and continues to
serve Palmer in his ongoing role as vice president for education and
clinical development.
"Dr. McAulay brings an impressive range of experience and a high
level of people skills to this position," noted Dr. Riekeman.
"During the interview process in both Davenport and San Jose, I
received unsolicited, rave reviews from everyone who met with him. With
his Ph.D. in organizational management from Temple University in
Philadelphia, he naturally puts a high priority on organizational activity
and solid communication skills. In addition, his experience as a faculty
member, educational administrator, practicing chiropractor and leader
within the profession provides him with an exceptionally strong
understanding of the requirements of a contemporary chiropractic education
and the role of the faculty and students in realizing the highest
standards of excellence."
"I am honored to have been selected for this key role at
Palmer," Dr. McAulay said, "I am looking forward to working with
its world-class faculty, strong administrative team and talented students.
We will be working together to further integrate the students' clinical
experiences with their classroom education, to increase the emphasis on
active learning approaches system-wide, and to further integrate the
academic program across all three college campuses."
Prior to joining Palmer College, Dr. McAulay most recently served as
interim president and executive vice president and provost of Sherman
College of Straight Chiropractic in South Carolina. He maintained a
successful, private chiropractic practice in Pennsylvania for 13 years and
taught at Temple University, Philadelphia University and the former
Pennsylvania College of Chiropractic. Dr. McAulay has an active research
history in both the management and chiropractic arenas. He has most
recently published in Organization Studies and will be presenting papers
at the upcoming ACC/RAC and FACTS conferences.
In addition, Gary Mohr was named vice president for alumni, development
and student affairs for the Palmer colleges. Mr. Mohr has been serving as
vice president for student affairs for the Palmer colleges, a
responsibility that includes the departments of Admissions, Student
Services and Financial Aid at Palmer College, Palmer College West and
those functions for the new college in Florida. A position of Vice
President for Alumni and Development was part of President Riekeman's
reorganization plan last spring, but the position had gone unfilled until
now. Thus, with Mr. Mohr's new responsibilities, two vice presidencies
have been combined into one.
With regard to Mr. Mohr's role with alumni and development, President
Riekeman said: "I have become increasingly aware of the importance of
filling this position sooner rather than later in view of our heavy
agenda. We need coordination of a wide spectrum of activities, and Gary is
well suited for that role." He cited Mr. Mohr's experience in
governmental affairs as a key factor in his new responsibilities.
Clay Tuttle, D.C., continues to serve as Director of Alumni at Palmer
College. Darrell Slabaugh continues to serve as Chief Development Officer
for the University System.
At Palmer West Dr. Riekeman has named Kevin McCarthy, D.C., M.S.Ed., to
represent him as the senior campus administrator. "Never before in
the history of the Palmer colleges have there been so many significant and
complex initiatives being conducted simultaneously," Dr. Riekeman
pointed out. "The administration and staff are up to the task, but
the level of success we attain will have a great deal to do with
communications and administrative coordination across the system."
Over the past few months Bob Lee, Palmer's chief of support services,
has filled this need on the Palmer West campus. "However, since he is
our point person for the construction of two campuses and the Learning
Resource Center in Davenport, I need him to focus exclusively on these
issues," Dr. Riekeman added. "Additionally, I want a strong,
full-time person to represent me and the President's Cabinet initiatives.
As such I have asked Dr. McCarthy, as part of his University System role,
to function as the senior campus administrator for Palmer West."
Dr. McCarthy will assist the president in representing him to the
Palmer West community; coordinating initiatives and goals set for the
departments by the vice president of that area; working on projects
created by the President's Cabinet, Palmer Chiropractic University System
Chancellor or Board of Trustees; and chairing the President's Council. As
required, he will also represent Palmer West in the community.
"Dr. McCarthy has a deep, passionate commitment and historical
connection to Palmer West," Dr. Riekeman added. "He also has an
invaluable knowledge of Palmer West's role in the initiatives of the
University System. With special attention to parameters of responsibility,
this appointment can ignite and empower the future of Palmer College of
Chiropractic West."
In addition to the administrative appointments, President Riekeman
named a Senior Faculty Council at Palmer College and a President's Council
at Palmer West. These advisory groups will assist administrators at both
campuses with a variety of goals.
