'Operation Outreach' supports U.S. troops

The Family Practice, Inc., raised thousands of dollars for the USO during its massive "Operation Outreach" campaign in support of American troops stationed overseas. Throughout April, its members donated hundreds of hours of service to residents in their community, in exchange for donations to the USO, the non‑profit organization that provides morale, welfare and recreation‑type services to U.S. uniformed military personnel.

For every $25 donation participating chiropractic offices collected, the USO sent a care package containing items such as global calling cards, disposable cameras, toiletries, and music CDs to a service man or woman. Each package also contained a personalized postcard message of well wishes.

"These care packages and cards will go a long way in bringing comfort and support to our U.S. troops," said Elaine Rogers, USO Metropolitan Washington President.

"As chiropractors, we have so much to offer. With our highly stressed and concerned communities, to be able to lay our healing hands on more people and contribute to the morale and well‑being of our troops is a privilege," explained Eric Plasker, D.C., president of The Family Practice, Inc. "We found that many chiropractors wanted to do something to contribute, but they just didn't know how, and they didn't have the resources to put a campaign together."

The success of the program was evident in the amount of money raised for the USO, and the number of care packages sent to troops overseas. But the program had an added bonus. It ended up being just as successful for doctors who participated.

"We had a great time with the 'Operation Outreach' grassroots campaign," said Bob Mulcahy, D.C., of Massachusetts. "This event was a win‑win for everyone. My patients loved the fact that we gave them an opportunity to give back and support our troops. We raised over $500 and brought in 25 new patients."

Barbie Phillips, D.C., of Oklahoma had a similar experience. "We mailed off 250 signed postcards for the USO, raised nearly $600 and signed up nine new patients," she reported. "We educated so many people about family chiropractic and I adjusted 133 people (including children).

Dan Curriden, D.C., of Georgia, was grateful for the opportunity to participate. "Operation Outreach was a big success here at The Lighthouse. We collected around $400 and attracted 12 new practice members thus far. Thanks for putting together this event," he told Dr. Plasker.

The Family Practice provided doctors with a complete support packet, including instructions, sample press releases and flyers, and other material needed to make the program a success.

"I really commend Dr. Plasker and The Family Practice for sponsoring this event," said Terry A. Rondberg, D.C., president of the World Chiropractic Alliance. "It was a creative and well-organized effort, one that benefited everyone involved and generated very positive media attention for chiropractic."
