NZCC appoints new president
After an extensive international search, the New Zealand
College of Chiropractic (NZCC) announced the appointment of Dr. Brian
Kelly as its president. Dr. Phil McMaster, a spokesperson for the
selection committee said, "This was an extremely difficult decision
to make due to the high calibre of applicants. Nevertheless, Dr. Kelly's
appointment has the full support from the committee."
In accepting the appointment Dr. Kelly stated: "My
commitment and vision is to inspire, motivate and awaken the high
performance team necessary to transform and elevate this institution to be
one of the finest chiropractic colleges in the world. The awesome sense of
opportunity and responsibility to contribute to chiropractic is not
something I take on lightly and is a core component of my personal
mission."
Kelly moved to
Melbourne
,
Australia
in 1987 after studying
science at Victoria University of Wellington. He graduated from Phillip
Institute of Technology in 1992, and built a successful
Melbourne
family practice over the
last 11 years. A mentor of many students seeking to become chiropractors,
he received the CAA Victorian "Chiropractor of the Year" award
in 2001.
As a member of the NZCC Board of Trustees for the past two
years, Kelly has seen the institution develop and grow.
"I believe the chiropractic profession has matured to a
level where we recognize there are different scopes of practice,"
stated Kelly. "While producing safe, competent practitioners who meet
and exceed all registration and accreditation guidelines, the college
produces chiropractors who have a philosophical basis for what they do and
a respect for the art of locating, analysing and correcting vertebral
subluxations. This is what our profession has been built on for the last
century," he stressed, "and I believe the pendulum has swayed in
recent years to a model somewhat different from that."
Dr. McMaster, head of philosophy at NZCC and interim college
president since the resignation of Dr. Robin Taylor in July, expressed his
pleasure with Kelly's appointment. College Board members and staff were
quick to thank McMaster for the valuable role he played over the last six
months, acknowledging his dedication, commitment and personal sacrifice in
fulfilling the interim position.
McMaster, who returns to his position on the NZCC Board of
Trustees, said that he will be available to aid Kelly through the
transitional months when needed.
