Mind, thoughts, feelings and the universal energy

by Dr. Ted Morter

One of the greatest conscious determinants of health is patient attitude, or how patients think about themselves and their surroundings.

Outward displays of bravado, confidence, egocentricity, or self‑assurance frequently mask inward convictions of self‑inadequacy, ineptness, stupidity, victimhood, unattractiveness, or even self‑disgust. No matter how convincing an outward show of favorable self‑esteem a patient may put on, if the inner conviction is that of self‑disdain, the body responds defensively ‑‑ it defends against a multitude of perceived threats and negativity.

Self‑esteem and self‑disdain are the products of accumulated thoughts and beliefs. The responses self‑esteem or self‑disdain induce in the body are the products of feelings.

Is there a person whose life has been so pristine that he or she has not committed a minor social or business gaff, or been ridiculed by a boss, parent, or significant other? Minor indiscretions or public ridicule generate feelings of embarrassment, shame, or humiliation to the very core of the sufferer's being. These feelings are often relived when the incident is recalled.

Feelings produce physiological responses ‑‑ blushing, sweating, nervous activity, and defense ‑‑ and the pattern of the response to the feelings (defense) is embedded in memory along with the memory of the event itself. When the incident is recalled, or when another incident occurs to bring about similar feelings, the pattern of response that has already been established sets in motion the same physiological activity. More than just recalling pictures, memory colors self‑esteem.

Accrued feelings about oneself dictate the level of self‑esteem. If patients feel good about themselves, the body is allowed to function normally and naturally without defending itself ‑‑ both their self‑esteem and health flourish. If they dislike themselves, for whatever reason, the body is continually defensive, functioning in a survival mode, and so both health and self‑esteem suffer.

Perhaps you have questioned why some people breeze through life with few major catastrophes, good health, success at just about every thing they try, and a generally good attitude. Are these "have it all" people happy, enthusiastic, full of vitality and satisfied with their lot because they are healthy, successful and think well of themselves? Or, are they healthy, successful and think well of themselves because they are happy, enthusiastic, full of vitality, and satisfied?

My clinical experience shows that the latter is true. Those whose thought processes, beliefs, and attitudes toward self or everything else focus on the best possible outcomes, and are judiciously oblivious to the prospect of "bad luck" or disaster are the "winners" in life. The flip side of that coin shows the same pattern.

Why?

No matter whether the outcome we expect and subconsciously work toward is positive or negative, our beliefs and attitudes program our subconscious to reach the destination or goal we have set ("I knew I wasn't going to get that job"). When we convince ourselves that a given outcome will occur, if we have anything to do with it, most of the time our projections will be realized. Each of us reaches his own level of subconscious expectations. But, there is more to it than conscious/subconscious programming.

Each of us has his or her own energy field that envelops us and interacts with other energy fields. All energy fields contain all information, just as the DNA in one cell of the body contains the same information as the DNA in all other cells of the body. Energy information is transmitted from the field to the body, and from the body to the field.

The body/mind is both a receiver and a transmitter. When the energy frequencies of the mind are synchronized with the energy frequencies of the fields, field/mind homeostasis is the result. When the energy of the fields outside the visible body (the universal energy fields) and the energy of the body/mind resonate harmoniously, health, success, and happiness result. When the energy fields are not resonating harmoniously, disease, pain, or even death is the product.

So, the common goal of doctor and patient is to help the patients restructure his or her thoughts and beliefs to establish this resonance with health.

Thoughts govern a person's life. Positive thoughts, negative thoughts, happy thoughts, sad thoughts, about self or everything else out there, all reverberate through the physical system. The energy of thoughts radiates from within to the field that surrounds the body. And, since the mind harbors and develops thoughts, and the thoughts themselves all radiate energy from the body to the surrounding fields, the way we think controls not only the physiology of the body but also the vitality of the external energy field.
