Why kids and chiropractic

by Dr. Dennis Nikitow

As I sat at the kitchen table watching my naked one year-old daughter, Alexandra run playfully across the floor, I listened to her giggle while her little bowlegs fluttered back and forth as fast as the wings of a hummingbird. With her shoulders back and her little baby fanny jiggling like only babies can do, I observed her hips and back developing her spinal posture and was awed at the power of the innate intelligence God put in every one of us.

I remembered the day my fourth son, Jordan was born with the cord around his neck and how I was right there to adjust his second cervical before he had a chance to even complete his first minute's worth of breath. Then, I thought of the little boy from Mexico brought to me two days prior.

Two and a half year-old Jose was paralyzed from the legs down and his left arm and wrist were locked up in a flexed position because he had brain damage, but tests were vague and inconclusive. They were told nothing could be done. The only thing my examination revealed was a gross subluxation in the upper cervical-occipital complex which I confirmed by x-ray. He was leaving to go home to Mexico the next day so I did an abbreviated report explaining how his subluxation was robbing life force from his little body and he would need adjustments.

As I adjusted his little neck, I felt an exchange of force only God would understand and I saw a smile in his eyes. Two days later, Jesus, the Mexican stone worker who referred Jose in, came in for his adjustment and he was ecstatic. He enthusiastically explained how after the one adjustment Jose was able to hold his head up normally and his left arm straightened out and he was able to open and close his hand!

As I shared this story with my kids over dinner, and we thanked God for making me a chiropractor, I was bombarded with stories from my kids, from my teenagers to my six year-old, explaining how they have tried to change their friends' lives by trying to get them under chiropractic care!

If you want kids in your practice, first understand the power you hold. It's God-given. Never underestimate the body's innate power. God made it and you unleashed it with an adjustment. Chiropractic isn't for pain. It's for people, big ones, little ones, young ones and old ones. Once you understand this, make it your purpose to help them all by keeping their spine aligned. Make it your mission to treat families. Have parents posture check kids for forward head posture and postural problems. Educate them that, 'kids don't only look like them from the outside.' Offer to check them initially free, but make it a policy!

I have devoted my new poster series to kids to impact people about the importance of having kids under chiropractic care, including medical research substantiating kids under chiropractic. Whether you are a symptom, condition chiropractor or a traditional wellness D.C., ask yourself this question: "Do I check my kids regularly to see if they need an adjustment regardless of symptoms or not?" If you do, then expand your family and love your neighbor as yourself by teaching your community the truth about chiropractic so they can give their kids the benefit of chiropractic care, too.

Like B.J. said, "How many lives will you change by changing one?" Maybe some day Jose will grow up and tell his story to his chiropractic patients.
