Canadian, US DCs care for more than 10,000 in Dominican Republic
A group of eight
Canadian and American doctors brought chiropractic care to more than 10,000
people in the Dominican Republic earlier this year, during a special health
care mission.
Sponsored by the
Dominican Integral Development Institution (DIDI) and The Center for
Community Health's Cigar Family Charitable Foundation, free health "fairs"
were held in Capotillo, Simon Bolivar, La Zurza, Buenos Aires, Libertador,
La Altagracia, Los Alcarrizos and Bonao.
The mission was
well‑publicized by the national press, giving the team an opportunity to
educate the entire population of the progressive Central American country.
Lise Cloutier, DC, the
team leader, explained to local news reporters that "chiropractic is a
holistic method of treatment which treats the cause rather than the symptoms
of physical maladies."
According to an article
that appeared in two popular Dominican newspapers ‑‑ Hoy, and
Listin Diario
‑‑ "She said that its practice contributes to whole body health and that it
is especially healthy for youths because it contributes to healthy
development and can prevent certain illnesses ... She said that depending on
the gravity of the case, an x‑ray may be required to determine whether
treatment should be given periodically, either monthly, weekly or every
three days, until the patient's health improves."
Traveling with Dr.
Cloutier were Drs. Pete Haggenjos, Mare Saulnier, Eric Larson, Jill Larson,
Ken Heinrich, Michelle Prince and Peter Buzek. The group told reporters they
"were happy with the warm welcome they received and expressed that they
wanted to return in the coming year."
