Book tops best‑seller lists

It didn't take long for "One Minute Wellness" (Nelson Books, August 2005) by Ben Lerner, DC and Greg Loman, DC, to make chiropractic history as it landed on the top spots on The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and Amazon.com best‑seller lists.

Dr. Lerner is no stranger to success. He has previously appeared on The New York Times list with his 2003 title, "Body By God."

"After the response we received from 'Body by God,' we knew Dr. Lerner was a proven winner and fully expected 'One Minute Wellness' to do well,'" said Jonathan Merkh, Nelson Books vice president and publisher. "Our team couldn't be prouder of these accomplishments."

Lerner, the chiropractor and physician to the US Wrestling Team in two Olympiads, and Loman, a peak‑performance expert, aimed the book at the millions of people looking for a way to be healthier in 2006. They tell readers to stop looking for magic pills and instead learn more about true holistic care.

In their book, they help readers understand the brain‑spine connection, explaining that if the spine is misaligned, the connecting nerves have poor communication between the brain and the targeted organs and muscles in the body. This impedes the body's ability to heal itself. These concepts are explained in depth in the book to help readers live a healthier life.

"It's a virtual doctor's report in printed form," Lerner explained when asked why the book has been such a success. "Doctors have been purchasing the book in bulk quantities and distributing them to their patients because it gives such a clear explanation and recap of the proven benefits of specific, scientific chiropractic adjustments. This makes the book one of the most effective tools for recruitment and referral ever devised. But now that the book has become a New York Times best seller, it adds a whole other level of credibility to the information."

Lerner added that the book "has brought our profession together in an unprecedented way. Perhaps the most amazing thing about the book is that for the first time in the history of chiropractic, leaders from more than 15 different principled organizations and four different chiropractic colleges have put away their logos and egos to help us write the book and clearly demonstrate the scientific foundation and amazing benefits of chiropractic."

The noted chiropractic leaders who contributed to or support the book are Drs. Nick Athens, Gerald Clum, Pat Gentempo, Bob Hoffman, Chris Kent, Erik Lerner, Fabrizio Mancini, Matt McCoy, Daniel Murphy, Marty & Tony Nalda, Jen & Palmer Peet, Mike Reid & Lise Cloutier, Guy Riekeman, Terry Rondberg, Stuart and Terry Warner, and Dan Yachter.

According to Lerner and Loman, the book defines a clear and compelling alternative to the crisis in health care.

"It's no secret that American health care is in deep trouble," the two comment. "We spend more money on health care than any other country, and yet are among the very sickest countries on the planet. Half of all bankruptcies are medical related, and on a weekly basis, the wonder drug of yesterday is the class‑action lawsuit of today. People know the medical model is on life support, and they want to pull the plug on it ‑‑ but no one has shown them a model that works until now. And that way is chiropractic."

The book includes findings from some of the world's leading researchers, as well as key insights from Dr. Joseph Mercola, whose alternative health website is one of the most frequently visited sites on the Internet.

Also endorsing the book is national best‑selling author Dr. Bruce Lipton, whose latest book, "The Biology of Belief" shuts the coffin door on the mechanistic view of life which is the foundation of medical thinking.

"One‑Minute Wellness" adopted the innovative, and highly successful, format of "One‑Minute Millionaire," in that it is two books in one. The right‑hand pages contain principles, technology, and action steps that will help people make true, dynamic shifts toward real wellness. On the left‑hand pages is an engrossing novel, based on a real‑life story, of how the miracle of chiropractic can make a difference in a person's life.

There have been inquiries about making the novel into a major motion picture, Lerner mentioned.
