DCs bring health, hope to Montana Indian reservation
On December 6, 2006, more than 8,000 gifts for children
and adults were distributed to the Fort Peck Reservation in Montana thanks
to a holiday effort created by the Mentor IV Coaching group of The New
Renaissance.
"Christmas on the Reservation" was a holiday gift drive
designed to reach every child from kindergarten to 12th grade in public,
charter, home school and boarding schools on the reservation. Each DC in the
program had his or her practice members donate brand new articles of
clothing like boots, sneakers, coats, hats and mittens as well as candy and
recreation equipment.
Kenny Smoker, director of wellness for 11,000 tribal
members of the Fort Peck Reservation, said, "It's just so impressive. The
intent is to bring a smile to every child's face. Every child in Poplar,
Wolf Point, Frazer and Brockton schools will get a present, Indian and
non‑Indian." Because of the special holiday efforts, the Fort Peck Tribal
Council declared Dec. 4‑10 as "Chiropractor Appreciation Week."
The New Renaissance group also received a proclamation
from the Tribal Council for its commitment to the residents of the
reservation.
"Christmas on the Reservation" is part of the global "Love
Has No Color" project that will send Brandi Charette, a 24 year‑old resident
of Fort Peck, to Life University's College of Chiropractic to study for her
doctor of chiropractic degree.
Charette has been offered a full‑tuition scholarship by
Guy Riekemen, DC, president of Life University and will began her studies
this January. Funds raised by The New Renaissance and its doctors go towards
Charette's other educational expenses, as well as the construction of a
family wellness chiropractic clinic and community/cultural center on the
reservation upon her graduation.
In May, 2006, the Mentor IV group visited Fort Peck to
paint and re‑roof an abandoned, dilapidated movie theater in downtown
Poplar. There is a plan to open the movie house by next summer to give the
kids in the community a healthier lifestyle.
The laughter, smiles and tears of joy from the children
receiving gifts expressed their gratitude. The New Renaissance hopes the
program will help restore hope, health and dignity in the original people of
our country. According to The New Renaissance, "It's our time to show what a
group of like‑minded chiropractors can accomplish. Healthier people do
create a healthier planet."
