Sherman adopts new mascot

The unicorn is gone and in its place is a lion known as "Pride." After considering a list of ideas submitted by students and faculty -- including "Whistle Pig," "Raptor," "Bear," and "Wolfpack," Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic has chosen the name "Pride," with the image of a lion, as its new mascot, ousting the 27-year-old unicorn emblem.

"I think that it's very fitting for the school, just in terms of the spirit behind which that mascot represents," said LaShanda Hutto, Sherman's dean of student affairs, who helped coordinate the search for a new mascot. "I really couldn't think of anything better that would represent Sherman, and I know it's going to be well-received by the students and something that people are going to be really excited about."

Out with the old ...

In with the new ...

Hutto said the emergence of Sherman's intramural athletics program was one incentive for choosing a new mascot. According to Hutto, the soccer team requested team jerseys recently but made it clear they didn't want a unicorn emblazoned on them.

The final design reflects the pride students have in their school, Sherman officials explained, and in the fact that the school is a "united family with a common goal," similar to a "pride of lions."
