This 'one size' fits all

by Dr. Stephane Laverdiere, Atlas Chiropractic System ...

What if there was a paperless system that was a practice management and educational system combined, one that would save you thousands of dollars each year -- and generate thousands of dollars? Surprise, there is!

Before I tell you about it, let me give you my story.

I'd found myself at an impasse. There was no system available for managing everyday clinic billing, notes, patient education, etc., so I struggled valiantly along with multiple software and education systems that worked independently -- always striving for (but never reaching) the twin goals of maximum efficiency and lowest possible overhead. But with costs continually rising, I needed to find new ways to streamline our office procedures, while increasing patient visits and attracting new patients at the same time.

In conversations with my colleagues, I learned that they were all grappling with the same problem, basically confronting four overwhelming challenges of how to: 1) maximize time, 2) improve patient notes while maintaining the same level of care, 3) educate patients consistently and systematically while being efficient, and 4) save staff time while increasing patient office visits.

The crisis of confidence that I faced with my office software was the same that most chiropractors experience. Ours is a unique fraternity and there was clearly no existing product that met our professional requirements.

Being the "computer-naïve" person I am, I thought, "I guess I'll just have to produce a software program that meets my needs and the needs of my colleagues." Atlas Chiropractic System was created by combining all the practice tools I had to have into one fully integrated system.

I was as objective diagnosing my practice as I was in evaluating a new patient. I dissected it from the inside-out -- leaving no process, no "system" unevaluated or "undiagnosed."

Next, I started developing a "laundry list" of all the problems my practice was facing. I even met with colleagues to get their laundry lists and then approached a patient (who happens to be a computer genius!) to assist me in my efforts.

We began by examining what was available. We looked at anything and everything specifically developed to assist chiropractors. I'd never gone into the process in this much depth before, so I was shocked at the cost and intractability of the systems that supposedly "met my every need" as a practicing DC.

I wanted a system that was customizable, because no two practices are alike, yet I wanted a strong foundation for my CAs to make their jobs less stressful and more productive. I wanted them to help grow my practice and not just file and shuffle paperwork and patient schedules. Coincidentally, I discovered my practice needed less staff time once the program was in place, even though I was seeing more patients. Not only were the CAs excited, they were less stressed, obviously happier and it translated into more internal referrals and patient growth.

I wasn't the sole contributor of input into the design of the software system. We have had hundreds of chiropractors in 11 countries and just as many CAs helping us with the process. One of the most important attributes of a software company is its ability to listen to its users. Not only do we listen to our users, we implement the features that will have the greatest impact on our growing list of clients.
